Five to Thrive Conversation: Finding Freedom
With Nicky Genders, author of Retired and Inspired
Let me introduce you to Nicky Genders who’s just written a book Retired & Inspired, which gets the Fifty Thrive highly recommended stamp (note to self: create one on Canva for next time!)
I first met Nicky on a retreat in France back in 2023 - we were both there to prioritise our own wellbeing during our menopause season.
It was a wonderfully wholesome and life-affirming experience at a difficult time in my life, and after four days together sharing laughter, candour and some tears, we left as friends.
I’ve been following Nicky’s adventures since then as she, her husband Andy and dog Gus led a life of freedom; house and pet sitting whilst travelling in a van.
It’s very hard to pin Nicky down as she’s always somewhere different either in the UK or overseas, so I caught a lucky break when I tracked her down to the depths of Wiltshire to have a Five to Thrive conversation. Take a listen below!
Having enjoyed her book, I was keen to talk to her about it, and to find out what it was like to take a very different journey in her mid fifties.
In this episode we explored the challenges and the highlights of the first five years on the road, and why she decided to write a book about it.
I hope you enjoy our informal chat and that it sparks a curiosity within you to follow your own dreams whatever they are, and to have the courage to take steps towards making it happen. Nicky is proof that you can change your life journey if you want to!
And of course, if it piques your interest then I’d definitely recommend reading Nicky’s book. Not do you feel like you’re going on an adventure with her, it’s also about how she navigated midlife challenges on the road - from menopause, and relationships to being away from family.
Thank you Nicky for chatting to me - I’m sure your story will resonate with, and inspire other women contemplating change and new beginnings.

PS. if you enjoyed this and my other writing, and want to support Fifty Thrive then there’s a way to support me
I don’t put any of my content behind a paywall as I want it to be accessible, but I do appreciate your support.
Thank you so much and enjoy

Saved to take a listen later. I love the romantic notion of van life...but then thunk I'm also too high maintenance. 🙄
